Nov. 16, 2009 (China Knowledge) - COFCO Dalian Rice Processing Ltd, a subsidiary of COFCO Group, China's largest food manufacturer and trader, over the weekend launched production at a rice processing plant in Dayaowan Port, Dalian, a key city in Liaoning Province, sources reported.

The new plant, which is the only rice processing facility COFCO Group has in northeastern China, has an annual processing capacity of 230,000 tons of rice.

COFCO Group plans to expand its capacity and is preparing to set up several rice processing plants in northeastern China where rice is grown, said Ning Gaoning, chairman of the firm, noting that Suihua and Shenyang would be good locations.

The Dalian plant increased COFCO Group's total annual rice processing capacity to 600,000 tons, including 220,000 tons in Jiangxi Province and 125,000 tons in Jiangsu Province.

Staff of COFCO Group have estimated that domestic rice sales will hit 300,000 tons in 2009 and said that strong demand led to the expansion.

Northeastern Chinese provinces Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning are the largest domestic sources of rice in the country. Their combined output accounts for one fifth of the whole country's rice output and one fourth of the whole country's commodity grain output.

Jul. 21, 2009 (China Knowledge) - The second buying delegation from mainland China placed orders worth a combined US$750 million in Taipei, Yunlin and Tainan, far more than the anticipated amount of US$300 million.

During the five-day purchase tour, mainland and Taiwanese enterprises reached deals worth US$146 million. Additional purchases will amount to US$600 million next year.

The delegation this time mainly focused on food, drinks, garments and general merchandise. The number of participating enterprises amounted to 743, according to the Taipei World Trade Center.

The visit of the second buying delegation will enhance the mutual understanding on trade regulation and pave the way for long-term cooperation, said Men Xiaowei, a councilmember of the Association of Economy and Trade across Taiwan Straits.

Mainland China will send the third purchase delegation to Taiwan next month. It will focus on the chemical industry, electronics and automobiles.

Oct. 27, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Innolux Display Corp, a subsidiary of Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group, is expected to produce more than 1 million LCD TVs for Vizio Inc in 2010, the Economic Times reported yesterday, citing sources.

The Taiwan-based newspaper said Innolux next year will produce 19-inch and 22-inch LCD TVs for Vizio, a U.S. HDTV and consumer electronics company.

William Wang, CEO of Vizio, said shipments of LCD TVs are expected to reach 6 million units this year and 10 million units next year, according to the report.

Sources earlier reported that Innolux will increase its LCD TV capacity from the current 300,000 units to 800,000 units in 2010, and that sales of LCDs will account for 20% of the company's total revenue. It will also increase its monthly capacity for resistive and capacitive touch panels from 2 million 3.6-inch touch panels to 7 million in 2010.

The stock price of Shenzhen Development Bank (SDB) ended at 22.21 yuan ($3.25) Thursday, up 1.51 percent over the previous day, continuing growth from earlier this year.

SDB's total net earnings hit 1.33 billion yuan ($194.7 million) in the third quarter, up 13 percent year-on-year and 11.5 percent quarter-on-quarter, making aggregate net earnings for the first nine months of 3.64 billion yuan ($532.9 million), an increase of 9.7 percent year-on-year.

Interest earnings accounted for about 86 percent of the bank's income, according to a report by CITIC Securities.

Other banks reported solid performances last quarter as well.

Shanghai Pudong Development Bank posted slightly higher net interest earnings of 2 percent in the first nine months year-on-year in its third quarter filing. The total net earnings of the three quarters were 10.29 billion yuan ($1.51 billion), growing 5 percent year-on-year.

The much larger Bank of Communications also saw interest earnings grow in the third quarter. Interest earnings totaled 17.39 billion yuan ($2.5 billion), up 14.67 percent over the second quarter, according to its third quarter report.

"Interest earning bounced back in the third quarter because of the recovering economy and the booming stock market," Wang Mingfei, an analyst for the banking industry at Orient Securities, told the Global Times.

As stocks soared, bank customers cancelled their savings account and switched to checking in order to invest in the stock market. Checking accounts have a much lower interest rate which means reduced costs for banks, Wang said.

"With the rebounding economy, businesses tend to need short-term liquidity," he added.

Another reason is that banks cut back on their low-interest revenue streams, such as discount notes that generate much lower interest earnings, in favor of lending. Banks generally collect 1.3 to 1.4 percent on discount notes, however, lending can bring them a 4 to 5 percent return, Wang said.

Shanghai Pudong Development Bank's shares closed at 21.57 yuan ($3.2) Thursday, down 1.19 percent from Wednesday, Bank of Communications' stock ended at 8.48 yuan ($1.2), down 3.2 percent.

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and Bank of China, are due to release their third quarter reports today.

Oct. 15, 2009 (China Knowledge) - BMW AG, the world's largest premium car maker, said on Tuesday that its vehicle sales in mainland China rose 31.8% year on year in the first nine months to 62,394 units, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

The auto maker sold 47,342 vehicles in the first three quarters of last year.

Combined sales of BMWs and Minis in mainland China in September were 8,131 units, 35.4% more than last September.

BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd, BMW's joint venture with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd<1114>, manufacturers BMW 3 series and 5 series models in a plant in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. The JV plans to increase its annual production capacity by 75,000 to 80,000 units by the second half of 2010 as compared to the current 30,000 units.

In August, BMW said it had applied to Chinese regulators for approval to set up an auto financing joint venture with Brilliance Auto, and that it expects the JV to become operational in the first half of next year.

Most of the media reports will not present a thorough and balanced analysis of the situation in Xinjiang, a vast region whose stability and development are not only strategic for the People's Republic of China but are also key elements of Central Asia's fragile equilibrium. Therefore, 16 months after the violence in Tibet, Urumqi's tragic clashes may affect China's image in the West. With the backdrop of a global financial and economic crisis that is not conducive to serenity, the understanding gap between Beijing and the West is widening. It is urgent to reverse this trend.

On the road toward comprehension and cooperation stands a serious obstacle: An invisible wall of mistrust, ignorance and fear is separating the West and China. Without any objective physical location, less spectacular than the "Iron Curtain" or the "Berlin Wall," more difficult to define also, it is an intangible construct of the individual and collective psyche that has to come down.

For a long period of time, China's Great Wall has been the symbol of an isolated and declining empire whose elites were incapable of adjusting changes. Today, the Great Invisible Wall could refer to the West's inability to fully appreciate the extent of China's transformation and how it is rearranging the 21st century distribution of power. For the analyst, the discrepancy between the paucity of Western responsiveness to the new historical conditions and the magnitude of the shift induced by China's return to centrality is a source of perplexity.

In one generation, 500 million Chinese citizens have been lifted out of poverty and by 2020, moderate prosperity will characterize a more harmonious Chinese society. Despite China's social, economic, political and geopolitical challenges proportionate to its size and diversity, one can not deny the overall progress accomplished by one fifth of mankind over three decades.

After 30 years of revolution under Mao Zedong, and 30 years of evolution (reform and opening-up) inspired by Deng Xiaoping, it has become impossible to conceive of a world order without including Beijing as a stakeholder or as a co-architect. By leaving Italy earlier than scheduled to coordinate the Central Government's response to Xinjiang's tensions, Chinese President Hu Jintao downgraded the G8 summit, although technically China is not a member of the group. To a certain extent, China's difficulties are the world's problems, and vice versa.

Objectively, one should acknowledge Beijing's achievements, welcome a reliable partner and rejoice to expect a promising future. However, one often suspects China's intentions, succumbs to sarcastic China-bashing and even conceives maneuvers to contain China's reemergence.

Some data indicate that China's image in the West is deteriorating. In a 2006 survey realized by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, 34 percent of Americans considered China as a minor threat and 47 percent as a major threat. In the 2008 Pew Global Attitudes Project, 72 percent of French and 68 percent of Germans had an unfavorable opinion about China. Just before the Beijing Olympics, the same institute asked the Chinese people whether they were satisfied with their country's evolution: 86 percent of the Chinese said yes, while it was 48 percent in 2002. The contrast between the two dynamics is striking.

Confronting the West's incapacity to give China the credit it deserves and also what is perceived as unfair treatment and, in some instances, as hostile behaviors, some segments of Chinese society are developing anti-Western sentiments. The fenqing, or angry youth, denounce various forms of Western Sinophobia and formulate, for example in Unhappy China, a book published in March, an extreme and dangerous nationalism.

China's top private entertainment company walks down the red carpet to dive into the stock market

While the rich and famous typically find themselves as the centerpieces of many a new love affair, dramatic weight loss or plastic surgery story, last month movie fans found their idols' names associated with yet another topic of discussion which is sure to turn heads—a new business venture.

On September 27, Huayi Brothers Media Corp. (HBMC), the biggest private movie production company on China's mainland, had its initial public offering (IPO) application approved by the examination board of growth enterprise market (GEM), the equivalent of the United States' NASDAQ.

Wang Zhongjun is the Chairman of Board of Directors of HBMC, while his younger brother Wang Zhonglei is currently chief executive officer of the company. The two hold 45.88 percent of stake in the company.

Among the 28 applicants for GEM, HBMC outshined others with a host of A-list stars from China's movie industry. Major HBMC directors/stars-turned-shareholders include Feng Xiaogang, Zhang Jizhong, Huang Xiaoming and Zhang Hanyu, among others. Director Feng Xiaogang and Director Zhang Jizhong hold 2.29 percent and 1.71 percent of shares in the company.

On October 9, the media company released its prospectus of issuing 42 million shares or raising 620 million yuan ($91 million) in the GEM. The official purchase was launched on October 15 with shares priced at 28.58 yuan ($4.18) each. The IPO is expected to bring 1.2 billion yuan ($176 million) for the company, double the initial expected amount.

The capital raised will be injected into the operation of TV programs and HBMC's movie business, said the prospectus.

Focusing on film

When HBMC CEO Wang Zhonglei thinks back to 1998, he can only remember "two big events" that year: the birth of his first child and becoming acquainted with Feng Xiaogang.

Before meeting Feng, Wang and his elder brother Wang Zhongjun, then owner of a successful advertising company, had invested in two unsuccessful movies and TV series that year.

"The big investment did not bring big profits as we expected," said Wang.

Outsiders to movie production at that time, the brothers did not even realize they would have to share movie profits with cinemas.

The 1998 New Year film Sorry Baby achieved a box office income of 30 million yuan ($4.4 million), operating an advertisement budget of 15 million yuan ($2.2 million).

"This movie was the first one in which HBMC participated in the whole process from idea to distribution," said Wang.

The significance of Sorry Baby was not the movie itself, but the formation of a commercially successful team, including Feng Xiaogang as the director, Ge You and Xu Fan as the leading actor and actress respectively.

In the following years, HBMC produced more than 40 movies and achieved box office success in the Chinese mainland. The movie Cell Phone set the box office record in 2003, drawing in 53 million yuan ($7.8 million); No Thief made a stunning 120 million yuan ($17.6 million) in 2004; and Assembly in 2008 brought in more than 200 million yuan ($29.4 million).

In 2004, HBMC's revenue accounted for 35 percent of the total income of the Chinese movie industry.

With a total staff of 300, HBMC realized net profits of 68.1 million yuan ($10 million) in 2008 and 31.6 million yuan ($5.3 million) in the first half of 2009.

Sep. 21, 2009 (China Knowledge) - TaiKoo Hui (Guangzhou) Development Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Swire Properties, on Friday reached an important milestone in the construction of a shopping mall at TaiKoo Hui, the firm's first mixed-use development in Guangzhou.

The shopping mall, which has a gross floor area of 1.3 million sq ft, is expected to be completed next year before the opening of 16th Asian Games, and will be managed by Swire Properties, a real estate subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed Swire Pacific Ltd<0019><0087>.

The shopping mall will host many internationally-recognized enterprises, including Ole Supermarket, which is run by China Resources Vanguard Ltd, and Food Republic, a food court chain run by Singapore-listed BreadTalk Group Ltd.

In addition to the shopping mall, TaiKoo Hui, located in Tianhe District in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, will also comprise two office towers, a cultural center and a hotel, the Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou. The project will have a total gross floor area of 4.37 million sq ft and is expected to be launched in phases late next year.

Swire Properties holds a 97% stake in TaiKoo Hui, while the remaining equity is held by Guangzhou Daily.

Swire Properties has 15.5 million sq ft of completed and uncompleted projects in Hong Kong and more than 7.9 million sq ft of completed and uncompleted projects in mainland China.

Jul. 28, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China Development Bank, which was converted from a policy lender into a stockholding commercial bank in late 2008, on Monday announced that it will issue at least RMB 1 billion worth of RMB-denominated bonds in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region from Jul. 28 to Aug. 14.

The bonds, which will target both institutional and retail investors, will have a denomination of RMB 10,000 and a maturity of two years.

The bonds, which are the first batch of RMB bonds offered by a mainland bank in Hong Kong this year, will have a coupon rate of 2.45%. The interest will be paid twice a year.

BOC Hong Kong (Holdings) Ltd<2388> and HSBC Holdings Plc<0005><HBC> will be joint lead managers and book runners for the issuance of the bonds.

CDB will set up its Hong Kong branch soon. In late June, the Chinese lender obtained approval from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Hong Kong's de facto central bank, to open a branch in the city, according to an earlier report from China Knowledge.

CDB, which is 51.3% held by China's Ministry of Finance and 48.7% by China's Central Huijin Investment Co Ltd, had sold RMB 5 billion in RMB bonds in Hong Kong in 2007 before it went commercial. It was the first financial institution in mainland China to float such bonds in the city.
