General Motors on the path to health

GM, another notorious bailout recipient, borrowed $49 billion from the government to stay afloat, and the company has been making huge strides toward paying it back. Reuters states that every quarter of 2010 led to General Motors getting a profit. This is the first time that GM has reported profits all year long since 2004. It's also the largest profits since 1999 reported. Since November’s initial public offering, GM’s stock prices have not moved at all even though its 2010 profits were at $4.7 billion. Since November 2010, when 61 percent of GM stock was owned by the Treasury, there has been great improvement since now the government only owns 33 percent. It is projected the General Motors share price can have to rise to $53 per share for the government to break even.

Was TARP worth it?

David Miller, the chief investment officer for the TARP, said the cost of corporate bailouts isn't likely to be more than the money allotted for the housing crisis, according to Reuters. About $25 billion was what the congressional Budget Office anticipated TARP to cost, states Miller. About $28 billion is what the Obama administration is expecting though. Timothy Geithner is the Treasury Secretary. He claims that the $25 billion estimate is higher than it needs to be. There are several businesses that owe the government nevertheless.
